Crafting the Perfect Headshot: A Comprehensive Guide for Somerset Professionals

We all know it … In today's digital-driven world, first impressions often happen online. Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, company website, or personal branding materials, having a high-quality professional headshot is essential. As a friendly and experienced Somerset photographer, I want to help you put your best face forward. In this guide, I’ll share key tips on preparing for a headshot session so you can achieve a polished and professional look that truly represents you.

Why a Professional Headshot Matters

A great headshot is more than just a photo - it’s a personal branding tool. It conveys confidence, professionalism and approachability. Whether you're an entrepreneur, creative, corporate executive, freelancer, or job seeker, a well-crafted headshot can set you apart from the competition and leave a lasting impression.

How to Prepare for Your Headshot Session

Basic preparation is key to achieving the perfect shot. Here are some of my top tips:

1. Choosing the Right Outfit

Your clothing plays a significant role in the overall look of your headshot. Before your shoot, we’ll have a short telephone consultation when you can tell me more about yourself and we decide on your choice of background - keep this in mind and then follow these guidelines for selecting the perfect outfit (you are welcome to bring a couple of changes to switch up the styles):

  • Keep it Simple – Avoid busy patterns, logos, and overly bright colors. Solid, neutral, or jewel tones work best.

  • Dress Professionally or in a style fit for your profession – Wear attire that reflects your industry and/or personal brand. A tailored blazer, dress shirt, or blouse can enhance your professional image. Knits and layers may be an option for artists and creatives.

  • Consider Layers – Adding a blazer, cardigan, or structured jacket can create depth and a polished look.

  • Ensure a Proper Fit – Clothes that are too tight or too loose can be unflattering. Well-fitted garments create a sharp, put-together appearance.

For Men: A well-fitted suit or a blazer with a dress shirt works well. Ties are optional but should be chosen in classic colors and subtle patterns. Or go for that jumper look!

For Women: A structured blouse, blazer, or elegant dress can create a sophisticated look. Avoid tops that are too low-cut or overly trendy.

2. Grooming and Skincare Tips

A little grooming goes a long way in ensuring a fresh and polished look:

  • Hair – Consider a haircut a few days before your session to allow it to settle naturally. Style it as you normally would for work.

  • Skincare – Stay hydrated and follow a good skincare routine in the days leading up to your session. Avoid excessive sun exposure to prevent redness or peeling.

For Men: Ensure facial hair is neatly trimmed or cleanly shaved. If using skincare products, opt for a lightweight moisturizer to avoid shine.

For Women: Keep makeup natural and professional. Avoid excessive shine by using a matte powder, and ensure brows are well-groomed.

Retouching blemishes is part of the service, so please avoid too much makeup or concealer – this can create an unnatural look.

3. The Importance of Rest and Hydration

A good night’s sleep and proper hydration can help you look refreshed and energized. Lack of sleep can result in dark circles and a tired appearance, so aim for at least 7–8 hours of rest before your session.

4. Posing and Expression Tips

Honestly - leave this to me! We’ll take time to have a little fun and coax a variety of natural expressions for you to select from. But, if you’re here looking for tips for a natural, confident expression:

  • Relax Your Shoulders – This helps avoid stiffness and creates a more approachable look.

  • Engage Your Eyes – Think about something positive or imagine speaking to a friendly colleague to create a warm, genuine expression.

  • Mind Your Posture – Sit or stand up straight with a slight tilt forward to project confidence.

  • Move in between shots – Have fun with this – it will help me capture variety and natural expressions.

5. Trust Your Photographer

As an experienced Somerset-based photographer, my goal is to make you feel comfortable and confident during your session. I provide guidance on poses, angles, and expressions to ensure you look your best. Relax, enjoy the process, and trust that you’re in good hands!
