Lionel Richie Concert at Somerset County CC

Wow, what a blast, I was asked to photography Lionel Richie's gig at the Somerset County Cricket Club, which was a truly magical experience. The excitement built throughout the afternoon with Andrea Bocelli’s son Matteo, and then Gabrielle taking to the stage to warm up the crowd.

Part of my commission was capturing the transformation on Somerset’s iconic county ground from sporting venue, to concert venue.

When Lionel Richie finally took to the stage, the atmosphere was electric. The sun was just beginning to set, and I climbed the one hundred and ten steps to the top of the neighbouring St Mary’s Church tower for a bird's eye view of the stage and the crowd. What a view, amazing that such an iconic performer was playing at this amazing venue.

As you’d expect, the concert was a masterful display of music and showmanship. Lionel Richie's performance was nothing short of spectacular, the crowd loved him and just about forgave him when he teased them about bringing on Diana Ross for a guest spot!

On the ground I was restricted to how close I could get, with the usual pap pit out of bounds as this was being used for Lionel’s videographers. My arms had a good bit of exercise holding the camera of the crowds heads, but the resulting shots, with the sea of people in front really captured the atmosphere and energy of the evening. All night long, Dancing on the Ceiling, well, Hello! … thanks Lionel!
